How to Earn a Living on Craigslist

Earning a living on Craigslist could take a lot of hours in front of the keyboard, or it might only take an afternoon to send out a bunch of resumes to prospective employers. Depending on the type of gig or job you want, Craigslist probably can help you find a way to earn a living.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Select the city or region you are living in, or one you will where you will move. This will bring up a localized list of jobs and services for you to peruse.
Step2
Look through the job types under the “Jobs” heading. Identify the ones you are interested in and click on them to see the most recently posted positions.
Step3
Look at the "Gigs" section. These are mostly contractual or one-time jobs if you are a freelancer.
Step4
Post your resume under "Resumes" for your area. Many employers check Craigslist regularly for new workers, so feel free to repost your resume after a week or two so it is at the top of the list.
Step5
Post your skills and abilities under the “Services." This is an especially effective ploy if you offer a contractually based service like haircutting or Web design.
Step6
Use Craigslist like eBay, but with caution. The advantage to selling things on Craigslist is that it's free: there's no fee to join and no commission is taken by the site. However, it is unregulated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply to a lot of positions. As in any job search, you'll get far fewer jobs than you apply for.
  • Be wary of financial dealings arranged over Craigslist. They are entirely unregulated, and it's easy to become a victim of fraud.

on 6/16/2008 You can search jobs on craigslist across multiple craigslist sites or cities by using this web mashup I just found out a few days ago. http://www.craigslist-search.com
Very useful little craigslist search website.

on 6/5/2008 sva, I do disagree with you. If you are selling and buying on Craigslist you are often meeting people at their home to pick up an item. With ebay, it is much more informal. There have been many incidents with people getting robbed on Craigslist. It is a GREAT website, but caution should be exercised.

on 5/8/2008 I disagree with the caution on step 6 of this useless writeup. There is nothing wrong with the fact that Craigslist is unregulated. In fact that's the biggest benefit of the site. There is no one regulating any aspect of your relationship and communications with other people. You are free to communicate as you see fit. No more caution should be issued for using Craiglists as there should for the act of living life.
