How to Download Drivers for an Inkjet Printer

A driver, in its most basic form, links the printer and the computer through a language that both machines can read. Drivers can be downloaded to help printers run faster and more efficiently. Follow these steps to download a driver for an inkjet printer.

  • Internet access
  • User's manual
  • Inkjet printer
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Read your user’s manual. Find the manufacturer’s Web site. This information can also usually be found somewhere on the printer itself.

  2. Step 2

    Log on to the Web page. Under the search feature, enter “Download Printer Drivers.”

  3. Step 3

    Follow the directions on the screen to download the driver specific to your printer. Make sure not to skip a step or move on before a step is completed.

  4. Step 4

    When the download is complete, make sure to restart both your computer and your printer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your printer’s make and model number on hand when choosing the correct download.
  • Make sure you have anti-virus software on your computer before downloading anything.
  • Run your printer afterwards to see if the program downloaded correctly.
  • Be sure you are downloading from the correct site. Downloading the wrong file could be harmful to your computer and printer.
