How to Use a USB Mouse with an Older Computer

Even if you have an old computer without a USB port, you can still use a USB mouse. Follow the steps below to use a USB mouse with an older computer.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • USB mouse
  • USB to PS/2 adapter
  1. Step 1

    Buy a reliable USB to PS/2 adapter.

  2. Step 2

    Install the drivers for the USB adapter using the CD provided with the adapter. Some adapters don’t require software installation. If you have a Windows XP operating system, the drivers should be installed automatically once you connect the mouse.

  3. Step 3

    Connect the mouse's USB connector to the adapter.

  4. Step 4

    Connect the adapter to the PS/2 port of the computer. The computer will usually detect the new hardware and install the drivers automatically. Your USB mouse is ready to use.
