Older computers do not have USB ports. The keyboard is attached to a PS/2 port (also known as the serial port) on these computers. However, it is possible to use a USB keyboard on an older computer that doesn't have a USB port. Follow the steps below to use a USB keyboard with an older computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • USB keyboard
  • Computer
  • USB to PS/2 adapter
  1. Step 1

Buy a reliable USB to PS/2 adapter.

  2. Step 2

Install the drivers for the USB adapter using the CD provided with the adapter. Some adapters don’t require software installation. Some operating systems, such as Windows XP, automatically detect and install the required drivers once you connect the keyboard.

  3. Step 3

Plug the keyboard's USB connector into the adapter.

  4. Step 4

Connect the adapter to the PS/2 port of the computer. The computer will usually detect the new hardware and install the drivers automatically. You can now use the USB keyboard with your computer.
