Determine the compatibility of the computers that you intend to use on the network. Find your owner's manual. Write down the brand name, the amount of RAM, speed of the computer and the type of printer inputs available on the computer.

Establish what kind of documents will be printed on the printer. Decide if the computer will be used for simple text documents or complex photographs with many colors.

Make an estimate on how much you intend to spend on the printer. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Ask about printer maintenance before purchase. Find out how often maintenance is required and if the maintenance can be done with out the assistance of a technician.

Calculate the use of the printer. Find out how many computers are being used and an estimation of how many documents will be printed per day.
