Most digital camcorders use a memory card. The memory cards are usually the same kind that are used in a digital camera. The memory card is used to record still images and videos that are compressed in the MPEG format, which makes them easy to store and share on the Internet. You can even transfer a small video clip from a tape to the card in some camcorders. Here is how to record onto a memory card with a camcorder.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Memory card
  • Camcorder
  1. Step 1

Locate the card reader slot on the camcorder. Consult the owner’s manual for specific location if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Insert a new memory card into the card reader slot. If using an old memory card, be sure that it has sufficient memory.

  3. Step 3

Check to see that the card is inserted properly. Usually card slots have a small light that indicates this function.

  4. Step 4

Memory cards come in different varieties such as Flash Memory, Memory Sticks or Secure Digital cards. Flash Memory are supposedly the fastest for information exchange.

  5. Step 5

Begin recording the event. If the card is not in place during recording, it will display an alarm message.

  6. Step 6

Most camcorders store images in the JPEG format and video in MPEG. Remove the memory card and download the files to your computer for editing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Recording time depends on the capacity of the memory card.
  • Memory cards are more expensive than tapes or disks.
