Located 25 miles west of London on the Thames River, the city of Windsor is most famous for being the site of Windsor Castle, one of three official residences for the Royal Family of England. The castle itself, built in 1070 by King William I, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of England.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Choose Accommodations in Windsor, England

Step1
To book any accommodations in Windsor, contact The Royal Windsor Information Centre at 011 (+44) 1753 7439000 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Choose one of the more modest local hotels in Windsor. These accommodations can still be quite expensive in comparison with the rest of England, costing $120 to $180 per night.
Step3
Consider a bed-and-breakfast inn or guesthouse if you are on a budget. These accommodations usually cost around $100 per night and include a large breakfast.
Step4
You can splurge and stay in one of Windsor's luxury hotels, most of which are located in the City's Center near High Street. The level of service in these accommodations can be truly lavish, but expect to pay dearly.

Get to Windsor, England

Step1
Fly to Heathrow International Airport in London, England.
Step2
Take one of the public bus services to get from Heathrow to Windsor, as opposed to using the rail system.
Step3
Consider walking, since most of the sights in Windsor are centrally located near the castle.

Get Out and See Windsor, England

Step1
Stroll through the peaceful gardens outside of Windsor Castle.
Step2
Rent a bicycle and ride across the Windsor Bridge, over the Thames and into the town of Eton.
Step3
Visit the famous Guildhall designed by beloved British architect Christopher Wren in 1689. Wren was also responsible for designing St. Paul's Cathedral.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windsor, to use a very British word, is quite swanky. Most accommodations are quite expensive, which is expected since Windsor has some of the most costly real estate in the UK. If you're on a budget, it might be wise to stay in London overnight and see Windsor during the day.
  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Since Windsor is relatively close to Heathrow, it is much easier to find travel options from London.
  • Be cautious if you rent a car while in Windsor. Vehicles left in parking lots and structures are often broken into. Never leave anything valuable in your car, even in the trunk.
  • Rowdy behavior and fights are common when the pubs close in the area around William Street.
  • Hefty fines of 500 British pounds can be charged if you drink in public. Stay indoors if you want to down a pint or two.
