Missoula is the second largest city in Montana, but only in size. It's on a par with Billings and Helena as one of the most frequented stops in Big Sky country. Hiking, hunting, fishing and the University of Montana all come together in this beautiful city.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Get Around Missoula

Step1
Drive to Missoula using the I-90 interstate highway. It's the main artery running to the city, and also the best route for casual visitors.
Step2
Fly into Missoula International Airport from hubs like Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis. These are the primary airports serving Missoula and also the easiest from which to get a connecting flight.
Step3
Fly into other regional airports around Missoula, like the field at Helena. They're only a few hours apart and you can easily move between them.

Find Accommodations in Missoula

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Missoula Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800) 526-3465 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Book accommodations in local hostels if you're on a tight budget. Missoula is a college town, and guests can often find highly affordable accommodations near the university.
Step3
Enjoy some wonderful accommodations at both high-end hotels in the city center and the university. Visiting dignitaries of the University of Montana will often stay at hotels near campus.
Step4
Visit Missoula during the Renaissance Faire, held in late November. Book your reservations in advance to be sure you find a room for this popular event.

Find Things to do in Missoula

Step1
Plan your trip around the rafting and tubing season, which falls during the summer months. People from around the world book accommodations during the summertime so they can head to the Clark Fork River for some exciting water sports.
Step2
Come to Montana to enjoy wonderful hot air balloon opportunities. There are few places in the world with a more incredible view from aloft than Big Sky country.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan on touring more of Montana than just Missoula, your best bet is to rent a car. Distances are pretty long and the cost of taking the train or even a bus can add up faster than the cost of a rental.
  • Get a map of Missoula as soon as possible upon arrival. The city is notorious for having a convoluted road system that takes some getting used to.
  • Winters are typically very cold in Missoula, so pack warm clothes if you're traveling from about October to March. This is especially important if you plan on hiking, hunting or partaking in any other outdoor activities.
