While at first glance Mississippi appears to lack the style and substance of neighboring Louisiana, that's just not the case. Grand casinos, smoky blues bars and plenty of outdoor activities make Mississippi a wonderful destination for anyone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Valid passport if traveling from overseas
  • Appropriate visas if traveling from overseas

Get Around Mississippi

Step1
Fly into Jackson-Evers International Airport just outside the capitol of Jackson, a great central location from which to head out across the state.
Step2
Drive to Mississippi using any one of the major interstate highways. The I-20 runs along the middle of the state, while the I-10 skirts the coastline.
Step3
Take the train to Mississippi from almost anywhere in the United States. Amtrak is the primary passenger carrier in the United States and maintains several stops in the state.

Find Accommodations in Mississippi

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Mississippi Convention and Visitors Bureau at (866) 733-6477 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Book accommodations in Vicksburg for easy access to the wonderful local riverboat casinos, such as the Horizon, Ameristar and the Isle of Capri.
Step3
Save some money by staying at a youth hostel in Jackson, Starkville or even Biloxi.
Step4
Head to Starkville in early September to participate in the Bulldog Bash, one of the largest student run music and art festivals in the south. This is a busy time of year so book accommodations early.
Step5
If you're an adventurer, hike along the many trails that course though Mississippi. Traveling from one quaint town to the next via the trails is easy and you can book accommodations ahead of your arrival time.
Step6
Tour the impressive antebellum homes of Natchez, Mississippi by booking accommodations in or near this historic town.

Enjoy Physical Activities

Step1
Charter a local boat and head to the Gulf of Mexico for a gratifying fishing experience. Boats are available throughout the year, particularly during spring and summer.
Step2
Pack your tents and your gear and go camping. Rent space on any of the numerous campgrounds throughout the state and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family.

Tips & Warnings

  • Travel to Mississippi during the milder period from October to March. Summers are notoriously hot and humid.
  • Be aware that many businesses are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina, particularly along the Gulf Coast where many were completely destroyed. Plan your trip carefully, especially if there are specific destinations in the state you wish to visit.
  • The security measures for traveling to and from the United States are strict and constantly changing. Pack with common sense and find out the latest restrictions and regulations ahead of time.
