Most older computer systems are equipped with PS/2 keyboards. The computer has a PS/2 port, which is where the keyboard connects to the CPU. If you do not already have a PS/2 keyboard, here’s how to buy one:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Choose a Keyboard

  1. Step 1

Be sure the keyboard has a PS/2 interface and not a USB interface.

  2. Step 2

Understand the types of PS/2 keyboards. Some keyboards incorporate programmable hot keys that make it quicker to access applications on your computer.

  3. Step 3

Acquaint yourself with multimedia PS/2 keyboards. The ideal multimedia keyboard has several shortcut keys for applications and other tasks.

  4. Step 4

Consider an ergonomic keyboard to reduce stress on your wrists. Be aware, however, that ergonomically designed PS/2 keyboards may be expensive.

  5. Step 5

Get a feel for the actual keys before you decide to invest. Some people like hard keys; others prefer a soft feel.

  6. Step 6

Check the keys for signs of wobbling, the first indicator of poor quality in a keyboard.

  7. Purchase the Keyboard

  8. Step 1

Compare prices online and at local computer stores. Online prices may be lower. Be sure, however, to study dealer details carefully before buying online. Check out reviews of the dealer.

  9. Step 2

Check out online buyers’ guides such as Epinions and MySimon (see links below). These sites compare brands of PS/2 keyboard and list numerous vendors along with prices.
