How to Find Out How Much Recording Time Is Left on a Camcorder

The main factors in determining how much recording time you have left at your disposal are the amount of tape and battery life remaining. When either your battery life or tape length runs out, you are out of recording time. It is important to maintain an ample supply of both. Here is how to find out how much recording time is left on a camcorder.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Camcorder

Checking Battery Level

Step1
Look in the top-hand corners of your LCD screen or viewfinder image for an icon that looks like a battery lying on its side.
Step2
Estimate the amount of battery life that remains by studying the battery icon. Like cell phones and most battery-operated electronic devices, camcorders usually label battery life with a series of bars or a percentage of the charge that has been used.
Step3
If you are unsure whether the percentage refers to amount of battery used or the amount of battery charge remaining, refer to your camera’s manual, as this is not consistent among all brands and models.

Checking the Available Minutes on Your Tape

Step1
Look on the packaging or case of the tapes you purchased for your camcorder. It should tell you in big letters how many minutes of recording time each tape holds.
Step2
Look on your LCD screen or viewfinder. The top left-hand corner often tells you how many minutes are left on your tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have multiple tapes ready for recording long events. Your child’s concert, for example, might run longer than expected. Your son’s football game might go into overtime. Have enough tape for every circumstance.
  • Have multiple charged batteries at your disposal. You can have all the tapes in the world, but without a battery, you’re not going to record anything. (It might be possible to plug the camcorder in with your AC adaptor, but most out-of-the-home recording environments don’t place you near AC power outlets.)
  • Buy tapes in bulk. Forget the two-pack! Look for the four-pack or the eight-pack. Usually these larger tape bundles are less expensive than buying the tapes individually.
  • Using the zoom feature will deplete battery life at an accelerated rate, so don’t sit so far away from your son’s concert band next time.
