How to Record on a Camcorder Using Image Stabilization

The shake in your hand, the slight rise and fall of your breathing, and just about any other vibration can greatly impact how your camcorder records footage of those special moments in life. But if you record using image stabilization, you will be rewarded with a clear, steady image, even if your hand is a bit shaky. The wonderful thing about image stabilization is that it allows you more opportunities to shoot without using a tripod.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
If possible, find the instruction manual that comes with your camcorder.
Step2
Determine whether you turn your image stabilization on with a physical button (some camcorders illustrate this with a shaky hand icon), or whether you have to browse the camcorder menu to find the feature.
Step3
Turn the image stabilizer feature on. You may feel a slight jerk at first as the stabilizer kicks on. Don’t be alarmed; your camcorder did not just break.
Step4
Record a test shot prior to the start of your actual filming. Make sure the image stabilizer is adequate without the use of a tripod by reviewing the playback on the LCD monitor or your television.
Step5
If you notice a lot of shake on your playback, retest the stabilization again. Record a test subject and playback. Realize that image stabilization will reduce your natural hand shakiness, but it can not eliminate the shaking from serious movements like driving on a bumpy road.

Tips & Warnings

  • Without some form of stabilization, your camcorder may be useless, especially when zooming in. Of course you can also use the traditional image stabilizer—a tripod.
  • Something as small as your pulse can cause camera shake. Even though you think you are being perfectly still, you may return home to find your big event was ruined by a tiny shake. It is important to test your camera before you begin videotaping.
  • Doublecheck your LCD screen to make sure your image stabilizer is on.
  • If you are shooting on a tripod, turn the image stabilizer off, as it can sometime create a weird "floaty" effect.
  • Don't zoom in the way. Handheld shots zoomed all the way in are never truly stable, although the image stabilizer may help.
