Cable Internet connections are high speed and reasonably priced. These connections are offered through the existing networks of cable TV providers. Signing up for cable is easy. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the purpose and use of the cable Internet connection. Do you need it for home use or business use? How many computers would be connected? Do you already have a cable modem? Answering such questions will help you choose the right plan.

  2. Step 2

Call your cable TV company to check the Internet packages they offer. If you do not have a cable TV connection, look for local cable Internet Service Providers (ISPs). You can look them up in the Yellow Pages. Alternatively, you can get a listing of local ISPs on Web sites such as FindAnISP and BroadbandReports (see links below).

  3. Step 3

Visit Web sites of popular cable ISPs such as Comcast, EarthLink and Cablevision to assess their packages. Research what hardware is required for the Internet connection, and check if all necessary equipment is included in the package. In case you need to lease equipment, check the extra monthly charge.

  4. Step 4

Do a comparative study of various providers. Look at their features, reviews and pricing.

  5. Step 5

Sign up for the service either by calling the ISP or by going to their site and signing up online (if available).

  6. Step 6

When signing up for a deal, carefully read and understand the fine print. Some deals offer low-cost services, but require customers to sign up for a long term of service. Look for hidden costs.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you already have cable TV you may prefer a cable Internet connection. In such cases, cable Internet is cheaper than DSL as the cables are already laid, and combination packages are often available at good rates.
  • Although cable TV companies prefer their subscribers to get an Internet connection from them, using another ISP helps you regularly receive information about the latest deals and promotions. This information can be used to sustain low monthly rates because you always have the option of switching to a company offering a better deal. With two different companies, it is easier to switch in case either service is unsatisfactory.
  • Cable Internet, like DSL, offers the "always on" feature so you can always keep your PC connected to the Internet. This, however, makes your computer susceptible to viruses and hackers. Disconnect when you are done surfing the Web.
