How to Order Cable Internet for Home

Many Americans prefer a cable Internet connection over DSL for their homes. Several households already have cable TV, so having an Internet connection through their cable TV network is easier and cheaper. Besides, cable Internet connections are available in rural regions as well, which may not be the case for DSL. Here's how you can sign up for cable Internet for your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the number of computers to be connected. The Internet plan you need would differ depending on the number of connections.

  2. Step 2

Check if you already have a cable modem. If you don’t, you can lease it for a nominal monthly charge. However, if you intend to have the Internet connection for a long period, it might be better to buy the modem.

  3. Step 3

Call your cable TV company to check the Internet packages they offer. Look for connections specifically suited for home use. If you do not have cable TV service, look for local cable Internet Service Providers (ISPs). You can look them up in the Yellow Pages. Alternatively, you can get a listing of local ISPs on Web sites such as FindAnISP and BroadbandReports (see links below).

  4. Step 4

Visit the Web sites of popular Cable ISPs such as Comcast, EarthLink and Cablevision to assess their packages. Check the hardware required for the Internet connection, and if all necessary equipment is included in the package. If you need to lease some equipment, check the extra monthly charge.

  5. Step 5

Order the service either by calling the ISP or by going to its site and signing up online (if available). If you already have cable TV, ensure that you take a combo package that offers both cable TV access and cable Internet. Make sure you order a plan for home users.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although cable TV companies prefer their subscribers to get an Internet connection from them, using another ISP helps you regularly receive information about the latest deals and promotions. This information can be used to sustain low monthly rates because you always have the option of switching to a company offering a better deal. With two different companies, it is easier to switch in case either service is unsatisfactory.
  • When signing up for a deal, carefully read and understand the fine print. Some deals offer low-cost services, but require customers to sign up for a long term. There may be hidden costs.
  • Call the ISP's customer service number and see if they are prompt in responding. Poor customer service can pose problems later.
  • Look for deals that offer free equipment. Cable ISPs offer plans that include the cost of modem and other necessary equipment. However, these are usually long-term plans.
  • Cable offers the "always on" feature so you can always keep your PC connected to the Internet. This, however, makes the computer a good target for viruses and hackers. Disconnect when you are done surfing the Web.
