DSL utilizes the unused bandwidth of existing telephone lines to offer high-speed Internet. Unlike cable, DSL is independent of the number of users online at a given time. Instead, DSL’s speed varies slightly depending on the distance between a subscriber and the nearest telephone terminal. With advanced equipment and fierce competition, many DSL service providers offer attractive Internet packages. Here's how you can sign up for a DSL connection.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the purpose and usage of the DSL Internet connection. Do you need it for home use or business use? How many computers would be connected? Do you already have a DSL modem? Answering such questions will help you choose the right plan.

  2. Step 2

Call your telephone service provider to check the Internet packages it offers. Some companies such as Covad (see link below) offer special deals for business connections. Other service providers such as Verizon and AT&T (see links below) promote packages designed for home use.

  3. Step 3

Check the availability of a DSL connection in your area. DSL connections may not be available in all regions, especially rural locations. You can check the availability by either calling the customer care number of a DSL Internet Service Provider (ISP) or by visiting its Web site.

  4. Step 4

Visit Web sites of popular DSL ISPs such as EarthLink (see link below) and AT&T to assess their packages. Check what hardware is required for the Internet connection, and if all necessary equipment is included in the package. If you need to lease some equipment, check the extra monthly charge.

  5. Step 5

Check what data-security tools and measures the ISP offers. All broadband Internet connections are vulnerable to viruses and hackers. Look for a service provider that has a reliable security system.

  6. Step 6

Do a comparative study of various providers. Look at their features, reviews and pricing.

  7. Step 7

Sign up for the service either by calling the DSL service provider’s customer care number or by going to its site and signing up online (if available).

Tips & Warnings
  • Browse through DSL reports (see link below) to view customer ratings for various DSL providers.
  • When signing up for a deal, carefully read and understand the fine print. Some deals offer low-cost services or monthly rentals, but require customers to sign up for long-term contracts. In some cases, connection may take several minutes, while there may be hidden costs in other deals.
  • Call the ISP's customer service number and see if they are prompt in responding. Poor customer service can pose problems later.
  • DSL, like cable Internet, offers the "always on" feature so you can always keep your PC connected to the Internet. This, however, makes your computer vulnerable to viruses and hackers. Disconnect when you are done surfing the Web.
