How to Find Cheap Hotels in Kigali, Rwanda

While the violence of a few years ago still lingers in the mind of Kigali residents, visitors will find it a friendly place, and a city that looks to the future.

Tips & Warnings

  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.

  • Avoid driving in the Rwanda countryside if possible. Most of the roads are muddy and steep and quite dangerous.

  • Unlike other African cities, the matatus in Kigali are generally driven safely and responsibly. In fact, they are the only public form of transportation in Kigali.

  • Malaria is widespread in Rwanda. Get all appropriate vaccinations at least one month before leaving for Africa, and bring plenty of malaria tablets.

  • Traffic is downright treacherous if you're a pedestrian. Be cautious when crossing the street.

  • Do not take photos of the airport or of military personnel or government buildings. Your camera will be confiscated, and you can face serious fines.

  • Drink only bottled water and eat only well-cooked food.

  • Beware of poisonous snakes, including the much-feared black mamba.
