Tips & Warnings

  • Women might not be allowed in many of the hostels, so check ahead if possible.

  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.

  • Power outages are common in Khartoum. Bring a flashlight just in case.

  • Caucasian women in general often receive too much attention by the local men, which can border on harrassment. It is wise for women to show respect and wear modest clothing.

  • Malaria is prevalent in Sudan. Get all the appropriate vaccinations at least a month before leaving for Africa, and bring plenty of malaria tablets.

  • Although crime is generally low in Khartoum, pickpockets are common on crowded buses.

  • Do not take photos of government buildings or military personnel. You may be arrested and your camera might be confiscated.

  • Sandstorms are common in Sudan. Head immediately indoors if one approaches.
