Instructions

  1. Prepare for Your Trip

    • 1

Know that while small enough to hike around in a couple of days, the 12 towns in Bornholm are scattered among beaches, farmlands, forests and cliffs.

    • 2

Plan to visit in the summer, from May to August, for the best temperatures, but also the largest crowds.

    • 3

Change your money to Danish Krones. If you are not traveling from within Denmark, stop at the bank or the Bornholm Visitor Center in Ronne to change your money.

    Organize Transportation

    • 4

Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark, and make your way to the island via a ferry or taxi.

    • 5

Rent a bike to get around the island. There are 125 miles of paths that wind their way through Bornholm.

    • 6

Consider renting a moped if you do not want to cycle. Cars are hard to come by in summer and parking fines are high.

    Find Cheap Accommodations

    • 7

Consider sleeping under the stars. Purchase a camping permit onsite at one of the 12 campsites that dot the island.

    • 8

Buy a hostel card if you plan to reserve a room. The five youth hostels on Bornholm offer cheap accommodations.

    • 9

Look into renting a cottage or even a farm if you are traveling with a group. While not cheap, the price of the larger accommodations can be split between several people who all have a comfortable place to sleep.

    • 10

To book accommodations, contact The Danish Tourist Board at (212) 885-9700 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below).

    Experience Bornholm

    • 11

Eat a few herrings. Smoked, fried or marinated, you can't miss out on a true Scandinavian delicacy.

    • 12

Knock a few balls around. A world-class golf course on the island offers golfers a chance for a game, and discount golf packages allow the family to save money on accommodations.

    • 13

Visit an artist's workshop. From textiles, iron, glass, and granite, artists on the island create arts and crafts for every taste.

Tips & Warnings

  • The official language is Danish, but English and German are prevalent throughout the island.

  • Special taxi service is available to and from the airport at a discounted rate. You must order service three hours before your departure from Copenhagen to Bornholm or from Ronne on your return trip.

  • Book well in advance for summer months as accommodations fill up early.

  • Bornholm is a summer holiday island, so minimal accommodations are available during the harsh winters.
