How to Find Cheap Hotels in Billund, Denmark

The town that Lego built was once little more than a few houses, but now it is a bustling town in Central Jutland. Still a factory town, the biggest draw is Legoland, which was built in 1968.

Instructions

  1. Get to Know Billund

    • 1

Keep your eye on Billund as it joins with its northern neighbor, Grindsted, due to municipality reform in Denmark. The new town will most likely be called Billund-Grindsted municipality.

    • 2

Visit Billund in winter if you want to explore the many outdoor activities without the theme park crowds. Weather in Northern Denmark is mild throughout the year, with winter bringing snow.

    Find Your Way to Billund

    • 3

Book a flight to Billund Airport from Copenhagen. Originally built by Lego in the 1960s, the airport is now independently owned and is Denmark's second busiest airport.

    • 4

Reach the city by car via the E45 motorway.

    Look For Cheap Accommodations

    • 5

Pitch a tent. The cheapest available accommodations in Billund are the Billund FDM Camping grounds. Chalets are also available if you didn't pack a tent or drive your camper.

    • 6

Reserve through Legoland if you plan to visit the park. Packages will include accommodations and tickets to the theme park.

    • 7

Consider staying in the hostel at Legoland Village. While not as cheap as most hostels, this family friendly hostel provides a economical way for families to visit Billund and Legoland.

    • 8

To book accommodations, contact The Danish Tourist Board at (212) 885-9700 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below).

    Explore Billund

    • 9

Take a tour of Billund beyond Lego. The town offers interesting tourist attractions and a variety of public art spaces. Many tourists bypass the city altogether when visiting Legoland, so cheap accommodations may be found in town.

    • 10

Get an art map from the public library for a self-guided tour of Billund's numerous public spaces.

    • 11

Visit Grene Old Church, which is the city's second largest tourist attraction. It is now a museum.

Tips & Warnings

  • The official currency in Denmark is the Danish Krone.

  • Don't stress on learning Danish; almost everyone you will encounter in Billund speaks English.

  • The airport is directly across the street from Legoland, so if the park or nearby accommodations are your destination, expect about a 5-minute walk.

  • Check to see if Legoland is open. The park closes for the winter, reopening in March and the rates at accommodations near the park are drastically reduced during the Lego off-season.

  • Driving in Billund can be confusing as there are no directional signs, even on the many roundabouts.
