The vast desert of Tunisia stirs images of exile, exotic travel and isolation. But the hot desert winds don't permeate the entire country. In the north, along the coast, Tunisia is a vacationer's paradise with beautiful beaches, high-end accommodations and a great deal of lively entertainment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Know Your Destination

Step1
Know that Tunisia has embraced tourism in recent decades and has become a prime holiday destination for many individuals and families around the world.
Step2
Explore the diversity and majesty of geography in Tunisia. Dramatic mountain ranges, expansive deserts and wonderful coastlines make this country stand out as one of North Africa's best tourist destinations.
Step3
Think far ahead when making reservations. Tunisia is increasingly popular among European vacationers and the best resorts and accommodations fill up early.
Step4
Be aware that there are many festivals and celebrations in Islamic countries that you simply won't want to miss.

Organize Tunisia Transportation

Step1
Hitch a ride on Tunisair, the national airline of Tunisia, or fly on one of the major European carriers.
Step2
Hire a local guide to show you the sites. This is the best way to see Tunisia and to find quality accommodations, restaurants and nightlife.
Step3
Tip your hired guide for better service and communicate clearly where you want to go and what you want to do. Guides often attempt to push their itinerary or take you to places you don't want to go.
Step4
Dust off that French phrasebook to ride the bus. Bus routes and signs are often posted in French as well as Arabic.

Choose Your Lodging in Tunisia

Step1
To book accommodations, contact The Tunisian National Tourism Office at (202) 466-2546 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Save money and see more of Tunisia by staying in a family-run pension instead of staying at a major resort.
Step3
Expect quality accommodations and lots to do in places like Tunis, Sfax and Jerba. Outside of the major cities, accommodations will be less glamorous and offer far fewer amenities.
Step4
Stay in a beachside resort in one of the popular cities for the best entertainment, shopping and accommodations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be aware that there are no direct flights from the U.S. to Tunisia.
  • Avoid the summer months, when prices are higher and tourist areas are crowded.
  • Dress conservatively. It's okay to wear swimwear, but only on the beach. When touring cities, dress to conform with the Islamic values of the country.
  • Exercise caution with alcohol. Alcohol should only be consumed in designated areas.
