    Stay Busy in Dhaka

  1. Step 1

Investigate Dhaka's small roadside shops and markets. Hop on a rickshaw and check them out!

  2. Step 2

Get a good taste of Bangladeshi cuisine. As a cosmopolitan city, you'll be able to find dining establishments with a western influence, but to experience native flavor, try a dish of dahl and fish.

  3. Step 3

Pay a visit to Dhaka's thriving theater district, Natak Para, to catch a show.

  4. Step 4

Make time to go watch a professional cricket match. Cricket is one of the most popular sports in Bangladesh.

  5. Step 5

See as much as you can of Dhaka's noteworthy architecture. Among the locations you might find interesting are the Dhakeshwar National Temple, the Star Mosque, Curzon Hall at the University of Dhaka and Lal Bagh Fort.

  6. Find the Right Accommodations

  7. Step 1

To book accommodations, contact Bangladesh Online at 011 (+880) 2 8119192 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  8. Step 2

Have a list of places you plan to visit while in Dhaka and locate them on a map.

  9. Step 3

Choose a central location that puts you near most or all of your chosen venues.

  10. Learn How to Get Around

  11. Step 1

Use a rickshaw to get around. Rickshaws are abundant, both bicycle and auto-driven.

  12. Step 2

Use the public bus system to get around in the city or to explore cities father afield in Bangladesh.

  13. Step 3

Take a train for a leisurely journey through the countryside. The country's rail system is efficient, although routes can be circuitous.

Tips & Warnings
  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Bring a Bangla phrasebook. Many citizens of Dhaka do speak English (in fact, the language is used in much of the city's business proceedings), but it's still a good idea to know some useful phrases and questions in the native language.
  • Spending time in a foreign place goes hand in hand with spending money there, so know the exchange rate! The national currency of Bangladesh is the Taka.
  • Most women in Dhaka wear sarees, so if you are a woman and don't wish to stand out like a sore thumb, consider dressing like the locals.
  • Bangladesh bus drivers are very aggressive on the road; bus accidents are numerous.
  • Don't drink the water. Dhaka is battling serious issues with water pollution and has a high rate of infectious disease. Only drink bottled water.
