How to Delete Digital Pictures Taken With a Camcorder

Digital camcorders have the ability to take digital stills. It is a handy feature, having both a camcorder and a camera in one unit. And with so much memory storage, it could be easy to get carried away with picture taking. Here is how to delete digital pictures taken from a camcorder.

1. Read the instruction manual included with your camera. It will detail how your specific camcorder functions regarding the taking and managing of digital stills.
2. Check your media. If you are using a hard drive, flash or re-writable disc to record on, you will likely be able to delete pictures. However, if you’re using discs that are only writable and not re-writable, you may not be able to delete pictures.
3. Transfer your pictures to a computer. Especially if you’ve taken many computers, having access to a mouse and picture management program will be a much more time-effective route.
4. Delete using the camcorders controls. Camcorders vary depending on the manufacturer and model, but most will have a button for “review” which will allow you to view pictures you’ve taken.
5. Scroll through your pictures until you find the one you want to delete and press the delete key, which is often marked with a trash can symbol.

Tips & Warnings

• Don’t expect as high of quality picture from your camcorder even if it has the same pixel count as your still camera.
• As of yet, no camcorder on the market has a still camera with enough resolution for significant enlargements.
• Buy an extra memory card or carry extra discs if space saving is a problem for you.
• Make sure that what you’re deleting is not the first frame of a video recording and is in fact just a single frame digital still. They are easy to mistake in some cameras’ review modes.
