How to Buy a Digital Camera Online

With a digital camera you can view your photos easily with a simple connection to your computer. The ability to share photos is another benefit, as they can be easily attached to any email. Since photos are stored on reusable memory devices, there is no film to buy, and unwanted shots can be easily erased. Below are some of the main things to consider before you buy a digital camera.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the types of photos you’ll take. Most newer digicams offer 3 megapixels of resolution or more; if your camera will mainly be used for 4” x 6” family snapshots or vacation photos, this will be more than enough. However, if you plan to blow up your photos to 8” x 10” or larger, more megapixels mean better detail.

  2. Step 2

Look for both types of viewfinders. Good digital cameras will have both an optical viewfinder and LCD display screen.

  3. Step 3

Buy a camera that uses rechargeable batteries. Many cameras use four AA batteries, which can quickly run down if the LCD screen is in constant use. Better are cameras that offer rechargeable batteries.

  4. Step 4

Look for a good zoom lens. You’ll be happy to have it when you’re at the zoo or on vacation. An optical zoom, which alters the magnification by moving the lens back and forth, is preferable, since little detail is lost when shooting.

  5. Step 5

Invest in as much memory as you can afford. Photos are stored on small, removable memory cards, and most digital cameras come with a “starter” card having 8 or 16 MB of storage. These can be quickly filled up however, so it’s wise to buy additional memory to avoid running out of storage at an inconvenient time.

  6. Step 6

Read and compare before shopping. Determine what features are most important to you, then find that camera that has those features at a price you can afford. Many Web sites offer side-by-side comparisons, reviews, tutorials and more. If possible, talk to a salesperson at a camera store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try it before you buy it. See how comfortable it feels in your hands, how easy it is to move through the menus, how smoothly the zoom lens moves, how long a wait you have between shots, and anything else you you’ll need to know while it’s in your hands.
  • Buy a dedicated photo printer if you plan on printing a lot of your photos. Your printing costs will be cheaper in the long run, and many have slots that allow you to print without going through your computer. Be aware, though, that they are not suitable for other types of printing.
  • If you are an experienced photographer and want more control over your camera, consider spending the extra money for a camera that features more manual settings. Being able to set your own focus and shutter speed (among other things) will give you greater flexibility in creating the exact shot you want.
  • Some cheaper cameras rely on a digital zoom, which is created by the camera’s software, not by lens movement, and results in blurrier images.
  • An AC power adapter comes in handy when downloading images to your computer, saving battery power in the process.
  • Don’t buy more camera than you need. It’s easy to be swayed by all the bells and whistles you see in advertisements, but there is no reason to spend money on features that you’ll never use. Plus, extra menus and settings can make taking photos confusing and frustrating for the casual photographer.
