  1. Step 1

Identify what you features want in a camcorder. Will you be taping family events, such as weddings? Are you a student in a film class? With hundreds of products to choose from, narrowing your search will be a big time-saver.

  2. Step 2

Research camcorders online using a search engine. Read consumer reviews and post questions in consumer forums.

  3. Step 3

Visit electronic departments and camera stores and speak to knowledgeable representatives. What can they tell you about your specific products in mind? Can they suggest another product that may better fit what you’re looking for in a camcorder?

  4. Step 4

Ask sales associates to allow you to hold the camcorder. If possible, tape footage around the store. This will give you a feel for how the camcorder works.

  5. Step 5

Accessorize. When you make your camcorder purchase, be sure to remember accessories that will improve your results. If you’re shooting weddings, look into a tripod.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find out as much as possible while you compare. Read consumer comments where applicable. How high does the product rate with consumers? What can you expect after buying the purchase?
  • If you are a student, talk to your professor(s) and ask if they could recommend a camcorder that will best fit your needs. Also check your class syllabus to see if there are any camcorder specifications that need to be met.
  • When speaking to sales representatives, be cautious of the in-house platform. Some sales representatives are encouraged to push the sale of items carried in the store. Is your item available at that store?
  • Always ask about warranty. If a component on your camcorder breaks, will the manufacturer cover the expense within a certain timeframe? Also remember to register your product.
