Not all subjects are a standard size, so not all recordings are captured at the same distance. Learning how to use the zoom on your camcorder in order to enlarge or shrink your subject is extremely easy, and has many benefits. Here is how to change the recording dimensions on a camcorder.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • camcorder
Step1
Consult the owner’s manual in order to familiarize yourself with the different functions and screens you may come across when using the camcorder.
Step2
Turn the camcorder on, and make sure conditions are ready for recording (i.e. lighting and sound).
Step3
Find the subject in your viewfinder or on the screen. Do this to the best of your ability.
Step4
Focus in (or out) using the zoom button on your camcorder. Some camcorders have this option as a physical button on the camcorder itself, while others have a menu that you need to access in order to change the zoom.
Step5
Adjust the zoom as needed, be it in or out. The zoom may need to be changed during the recording, if the subject moves.
Step6
You can also change the dimensions from 16x9 ratio to 3x4 ratio. 16x9 is typical “movie” or widescreen ratio, while 3x4 is typical TV ratio. Consult your owners manual to find out how to switch between these two ratios.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you are familiar with all the functions and parts of the camera before beginning.
  • Locate the zoom button before you need to use. Hitting the wrong button during recording can have disastrous consequences.
  • Move closer to the subject if the zoom cannot get close enough.
  • 16x9 ratio is good for sporting events and plays, while 3x4 is good for interviews and basic home use.
  • Don’t zoom in so close that the subject is hard to distinguish.
  • Zooming in too close may leave recordings grainy and blurry. Be sure to do a test run before you record.
