Rate: (0 Ratings)

Buying a new IEEE 1394 for your camcorder is a fairly easy process, but also may be an expensive one. The 1394 is an external bus that supports very high rates of data transfer. It is normally known as FireWire.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Camcorder
Step1
Determine which type of IEEE 1394 ports your camera and/or computer have. There are two versions of port connectors, four pin and six pin. The four pin connector is smaller and usually found on the camera. The six pin connector is larger and found next to the USB ports on your computer.
Step2
Determine the speed of IEEE 1394 connections on your camera and computer. To do this, read your product literature. The ‘A’ version is rated at 400 Mbs, and the ‘B’ version is rated at 800 Mbs.
Step3
Determine the length of cord you need to purchase. Measure the distance from where you place your camcorder to where the IEEE 1394 port is located on your computer.
Step4
Go online to determine the best price for the cable you need. Most of the time, the best deals can be found online.
Step5
When you receive your new cable, test it right away for compatibility. If it does not work with your camcorder, return it to the vendor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a good quality cable to replace damaged or worn cables.
  • Be sure to purchase the correct type of cable, usually a four pin to six pin FireWire cable.
  • Save the packaging and receipt for the cable in case it needs to be returned.
  • Find the lowest prices by searching online.
