You have created an iTunes podcast and want to get the iPod users on your Web site to utilize this new tool. The easy way would be to provide them with a link to iTunes, and send them on their way. However, this strategy would be a self-defeating effort, as you would be sending your hard-won visitors to another site that most likely hosts your competitors. So what are you to do? Simply bring iTunes subscriptions to your site by adding an iTunes subscribe button. Sound simple enough? Well, it is. Just follow the directions below.
Open your favorite text editor or the Web page creator that you used to originally design your site.
Open iTunes and locate the URL of your podcast. Or search your website to find the URL of your podcast, go to Apple and download a small Apple image to place on your site.
Locate the spot where you wish to place the icon on your site (maybe under a term such as "Podcasts") and place the Apple image that you downloaded.
Now hyper link the following where the link is to your podcast: itpc://www.example.com/podcast.xml. Note that the front term is itpc, not http. This front term will enable the link to activate iTunes rather than the browser that the visitor typically uses.
Upload your site back to the server with your new image and link. You are ready to roll at this point, with an Apple Podcast link on your site.
Tips & Warnings
- iTunes supports the following media formats: .m4a, .mp3, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, and .pdf.
- Test your link to make sure that it works by clicking on it and launching iTunes.
- It may take a few tries to get the format of the .xml correct; keep working with it and trying it out before submitting to iTunes.
