Located in the Caribbean, Grenada is an island positioned northeast of Trinidad. Grenada is affectionately referred to as Spice Island. It was given its nickname because it's rich in nutmeg, ginger and cloves, as well as cocoa. Grenada consists of secluded beaches, crystal-clear bays and rugged mountains. The island is also home to rainforests and breathtaking waterfalls.

Know Your Destination

Step1
Expect hot weather whenever you visit, with high temperatures averaging about 86 degrees F daily. Rain is prevalent from June through November, providing about 22 wet days per month. During its dry period, Grenada still sees 12 days of rain each month.

The official language of Grenada is English.

The official currency of Grenada is the Caribbean dollar. However, the United States dollar is welcomed and widely accepted on the island.

You'll need a passport and a return ticket to gain access to Grenada; a visa is also required for citizens of certain countries. Citizens of Canada and the United States are permitted to provide proof of citizenship in lieu of passports and visas.

Organize Transportation

Arrive by air via the Point Salines International Airport. A number of airlines offer direct flights to Grenada; connecting flights are also available from Trinidad and Barbados.

Choose to cruise to Grenada. St. George's, the capital, is a popular port for cruise ships.

Get around in Grenada by taxi or bus. Car rentals are available as well.

Select accommodations on Carriacou for uncrowded beaches and plenty of room availability. Carriacou offers visitors a slow, low-key pace.

Seek out Primary Tourist Attractions

Grenada has three rum distilleries that are known far and wide. Each distillery offers sugar production tours.
Step2
Check out the Grenada Chocolate Factory. Using vintage machinery, this factory uses the sun's power to produce organic chocolate; tours are available.
Step3
Visit De La Grande to find some of Grenada's nutmeg products. You'll find everything from liqueur to pepper sauce.

Tips & Warnings

  • Grenadians take attire seriously when it comes to places of business, government offices and banks. In Grenada, it is considered rude to dress for the beach when you are far from it.
  • Expect an 8 percent tax at hotels and eateries; a 10 percent service charge may be added as well.
