Located in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman Island is the largest of a group of islands not far from Cuba. Grand Cayman Island is a popular vacation destination, known for clear waters, pristine beaches and plenty of entertainment options. A favorite with divers, the island also offers excllent cuisine, lots of tourist shops and accommodations ranging from the cheap to the very expensive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access for reserving accommodations
  • Proof of citizenship

Know Your Destination

Step1
Enjoy the tropical marine climate of Grand Cayman Island. From May until October, you can expect warm, rainy days. You can expect dry weather with average temperatures in the mid 70s from late November until May.
Step2
Recognize that Christianity is the main religion on Grand Cayman Island. Ports are closed on Sundays and religious holidays.
Step3
Know that citizens of the United States do not need visas or passports to visit the island; proof of citizenship is required, however. Citizens of other countries may need visas and passports to enter.
Step4
Forget the phrasebook. English is the official language on Grand Cayman Island.
Step5
Recognize that the official currency is the Cayman Island dollar. The United States dollar is also widely accepted.

Organize Transportation

Step1
Arrive by air using the Owen Roberts International Airport. A variety of commercial airlines offer flights to this airport.
Step2
Opt to arrive via cruise ship. Offering close proximity to the island's downtown area, George Town Harbor is the preferred docking location for cruise ships.
Step3
Get around the island using a rental car; they are in plentiful supply on the island. Mopeds and scooter rentals are available as well.

Choose Cheap Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Cayman Islands Vacations & Business Directory at (345) 943-4400 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Consider renting a house for a week and sharing it with friends or family members. You can split the costs and enjoy a homey atmosphere.
Step3
Select a cottage to have a kitchen and most of the comforts of home. Some are located within walking distance of the beach.
Step4
Choose a bed and breakfast for cheap accommodations that offer a range of amenities. Some offer spa services.
Step5
Select a smaller hotel, further away from the beach, for less expensive accommodations. Though there are exceptions to the rule, hotels with fewer rooms tend to be less pricey.
Step6
Leave your tent at home. Camping isn't allowed on Grand Cayman Island.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid vacationing on Grand Cayman Island from June through late November. This period is hurricane season and summer storms, if not actual hurricanes, may be fairly regular.
  • Keep in mind that most Grand Cayman hotels are expensive. Look for vacation packages, deals and hidden gems to save money.
