Djibouti is a small African country in the Gulf of Aden. It is a great place to visit on your way to Ethiopia or Eritrea.

    Know Your Destination

  1. Step 1

    Convert your money to the official currency, the Djibouti franc.

  2. Step 2

    Learn to say a few Arabic phrases or hire a translator to help you during your visit.

  3. Organize Your Transportation in Djibouti

  4. Step 1

    Fly into the Ambouli-Djibouti International Airport. This airport is small but it offers several international flights, mostly from France and Kenya.

  5. Step 2

    Take the bus within the country of Djibouti. There are many local and national bus routes that link the major cities and points of interest.

  6. Choose Your Accomodations

  7. Step 1

    To book accommodations, contact Djibouti National Tourism Office at 011 (+253) 35 37 90.

  8. Step 2

    Find cheap accommodations near the airport, where rates are significantly lower than hotels near city centers and popular attractions.

  9. Step 3

    Find inexpensive accommodations by searching in areas further away from tourist hot spots.

  10. Step 4

    Make your reservations well in advance to find the best deals.

  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Register with the nearest U.S. Embassy when you land in Djibouti.
  • While Djibouti is a relatively stable and safe country, its neighboring countries such as Somalia are less secure. Take extra precautions when traveling near Djibouti's borders.
