Winchester well deserves its reputation as a peaceful beautiful city nestled in the English countryside. Its cathedral is one of the most extraordinary structures in England, and the town itself draws thousands of visitors each year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A valid passport from your nation of origin
  • A computer with Internet access in order to book reservations online

Know Your Destination

Step1
Know that Winchester was once the capital of England.
Step2
Be aware that Winchester suffers from the same notorious weather as the rest of England. Cold, cloudy, damp, rainy winters give way to damp, cloudy summers. You may still be able to enjoy a healthy dose of sunshine there in the summer, though, if you time your trip well.
Step3
Visit Winchester Cathedral, one of the oldest and most famous cathedrals in the world. Construction on this landmark began in 1079, and the cathedral includes the longest Gothic nave in existence.

Plan Your Transportation

Step1
Fly into London's Heathrow Airport for the easiest way to get to Winchester, England. Heathrow is about 60 miles from Winchester, but you can easily take mass transit into Winchester itself.
Step2
Take the train from Heathrow to reach Winchester. The route is served regularly, and a round-trip fare is definitely a bargain.
Step3
Walk through Winchester wherever possible. Driving will mean missing little hidden treasures like coffee houses and shops on the way, and almost everything in Winchester is within walking distance of the train station.

Find Cheap Hotels and Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Tourist Information Centre Winchester Guildhall at 011 (+44) 0 1962 840 500 or visit their Web site (see Resources below)
Step2
Book accommodations in Winchester's outlying cities, like Eastleigh, Southampton, East Hampton or Test Valley. Accommodations in these cities are sometimes cheap compared to Winchester itself; nightly rates can be considerably less than you'd find elsewhere.
Step3
Find a mid-range hotel near the city center if you want to stay within the borders of Winchester. Winchester's most popular tourist destinations are within walking distance of the city center. Mid-range hotels usually cost somewhere between $100 and $200 per night.
Step4
Consider staying in a hostel in Winchester or Southampton if you want to have access to good cheap accommodations. Hostels often charge rates that are way below $100 a night.

Tips & Warnings

  • A visa is not required for stays of up to six months for citizens of the US, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or Australia. Citizens of other countries in Europe do not need visas, either.
