Nottingham, England, is easily one of the most famous cities in the country, having given birth to the legend of Robin Hood. Don't worry, however; today's Nottingham is far more welcoming to rich and poor alike, and has one of the richest histories of any city in Europe.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A valid passport from your nation of origin
  • A computer with Internet access in order to book reservations online

Know Your Destination

Step1
Know that there's more to Nottingham, England than just Robin Hood. The city is also famous for one of the most extensive cave networks in England.
Step2
Know that Nottingham is located at approximately the center of England, along the River Leen.
Step3
Visit the Nottingham Castle Museum for an extraordinary look back in time. Easily one of England's most popular tourist destinations, Nottingham Castle Museum houses the world-famous statue of Robin Hood himself, as well as one of the most beautifully maintained gardens in England.

Getting to Nottingham, England

Step1
Take the train from London's Heathrow Airport for the easiest way to reach the city. It takes more time than arriving at closer airports, but it's also a cheap alternative.
Step2
Fly to Birmingham International Airport if you want to be closer to the city than you would be by flying into Heathrow. It's an expensive airport to land in because of the infrequency of flights, but a terrific point to fly into for convenience.
Step3
Fly into Nottingham East Midlands Airport from destinations in England as an alternative to taking a train. It's not a cheap airport to fly into, but it's worth it for the convenience.

Find Cheap Hotels and Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Nottingham Tourism Centre at 011 (+44) 08444 77 5678 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Book accommodations in the cheap hostels that are found in Nottingham. There are excellent values to be had in the city, and it's not uncommon to find lodging in a good location at extremely cheap prices.
Step3
Be aware that St. Ann's and The Meadows are tougher sections of the city. Take appropriate precautions if you book a hotel in these areas of town, such as being careful not to walk alone at night.
Step4
Spend a few nights in cheap accommodations in outlying cities. Nearby communities like Newark, Mansfield and Edwinstowe maintain a good number of accommodations to help with the peak season influx of tourists, and often charge less than what you'd find in Nottingham itself.

Tips & Warnings

  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Avoid airport problems by getting information on the latest security regulations governing flights into England. For example, certain items may be not be allowed in carry-on baggage.
