Things You'll Need:

  • A guide to the city

    Know Your Destination

  1. Step 1

Scare yourself silly and seek out the bats at Congress Avenue Bridge. More than 1.5 million bats have made this bridge their home and fly out en masse at sunset to hunt for food.

  2. Step 2

Take a dip in one of Austin's many water sources. Beyond being located on the Colorado River, Austin also offers three popular man-made lakes.

  3. Seek Out Accommodations

  4. Step 1

To book accommodations, contact Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau at (800) 926-2282 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  5. Step 2

Save your pennies by staying at a 1- or 2-star chain motel. Austin offers these cheap accommodations for under $50.

  6. Step 3

Enjoy Austin's tropical weather by camping out at one of the plentiful state parks. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department works to make sure these natural resources are beautiful and accessible, so be sure to check out this cheap lodging alternative.

  7. Step 4

Treat yourself with a stay at the historic and luxurious hotel. Austin, particularly the downtown area, offers showpiece accommodations starting around $200 a night.

  8. Get Around Town

  9. Step 1

Take a boat ride down the Colorado River. This enticing waterway cuts through Austin and riding through is an excellent way to get an up close and personal view of the city.

  10. Step 2

Take a bus to feel like one of the locals. This cheap mode of transportation is widely available thanks to Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority and will run you about 50 cents a ride.

  11. Step 3

Hop on a bike and pedal your way to bliss. As the western area of Austin offers many rolling hills, a bike ride is a perfect way to see the sites and get your exercise.

  12. See the Sights

  13. Step 1

Seek out some raw talent. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin offers an enviable variety of clubs where you can see new and old talent perform.

  14. Step 2

Meet a soon-to-be celebrity at the Austin Film Festival. This festival attracts the talent of the film business and is only about $100 a badge to get in.

  15. Step 3

Bring your camera up to Mount Bonnell and take some pics of Austin. This popular attraction overlooks the Colorado River and Lake Austin from its observation deck.
