In a state famous for winter sports and fall foliage, Hampton Beach, New Hampshire is the place to go in the summer. Located on the Atlantic coast, it's the busiest beach area in the state and boasts more than 80 free evening concerts and weekly fireworks displays during the summer months. Despite all the hot-weather fun and attractions, this is a year-round resort that's also magical during the winter holidays.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Credit card
  • Hotel reservation
  • Map
  • Camera
  • Computer
  • Plane tickets
  • Rental car

Choose Your Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Hampton Beach Village District at (800) GET A TAN or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Enjoy the views that Hampton Beach is known for. For such a small beachfront area, there are plenty of choices among B&Bs, cottages, campgrounds and hotels, all within walking distance of the beach.
Step3
Use your Hampton Beach accommodations as a home base and plan excursions to nearby areas. As New Hampshire is a small state, you might find that traveling to other districts from the convenient Hampton Beach location is easier than you thought.
Step4
Scoop up cheap deals by traveling to Hampton Beach in the winter and early spring off-season. National chain hotel prices won't be much lower, but the rates on rental properties and independent inns often are.
Step5
Book early. Grab your credit card and get on the phone sooner rather than later. Summer rentals fill up quickly, especially the cheap ones.

Get In and Out of Town Easily

Step1
Try C & J Trailways for bus and shuttle rides to outlying cities, including Boston and Portsmouth.
Step2
Fly into Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. An alternative to the very busy Logan Airport in Boston, Manchester Airport is less than an hour from Hampton Beach.

Explore the City

Step1
Bring a camera. From mid-June to the end of the month is the free Sand Sculpting Competition, featuring 250 tons of sand, lots of creativity and a $10,000 grand prize. It's one of the many free events during the summer.
Step2
Pack your earplugs if you don't like loud noises—or you kids don't. There are 14 special fireworks displays during the summer, ending with the season finale in September.
Step3
Get wet. There are deep sea fishing tours and water slides for those who don't mind a little water, and a seafood festival for those who only want to whet their appetite.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a very seasonal community and rates may vary widely from summer to winter.
  • Since it's a small community, you can see most of it on the cheap just by walking--or swimming--along the coast.
