Known as The Bluegrass State, Kentucky is a state that is considered to both be northern and southern at the same time. The bluegrass term comes from the natural grasses that grow here in the western part of the state. Kentucky is perhaps best known for horse breeding, horse racing (The Kentucky Derby), bourbon production and coalfields.

Find Local Cheap Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Kentucky Department of Tourism at (800) 225-8747 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Look for the most luxurious hotels in historic districts in downtown Louisville. Prices are not cheap here, but are still under a few hundred dollars a night, even for the most expensive accommodations.
Step3
Seek riverside accommodations in cities like Paducah. Here, at the Illinois-Kentucky border, you can find cheap rooms overlooking the union of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers.
Step4
Book a vacation package with a travel agent or popular travel Web site to get cheap deals on accommodations and rental car packages.
Step5
Visit a bed and breakfast establishment in many quaint areas of Kentucky, including Lexington, Versailles, Louisville, Glasgow and many other cities. Rates traditionally are affordable, around the same price as 3-star accommodations in most areas of the state.

Take in Local Sights

Step1
Visit one of many of the state's stunning lakes or rivers, which bisect the state at cities like Paducah, Frankfort and Covington.
Step2
Experience history at the Kentucky Derby every May in Louisville. This horse racing classic brings in hundreds of thousands of visitors every spring and there are countless festivals, concerts and activities associated with the derby for a two-week period.
Step3
Eat some of the world's best barbecue in Owensboro, Kentucky, the self-proclaimed "Barbecue Capital of the World." Here, the International Bar-B-Q Festival is held every May.

Find the Best Ways to Travel

Step1
Fly into one of three state airports located in Louisville, Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky near Hebron and Lexington. Nashville, Tennessee's airport is also 40 miles south of the state line.
Step2
Rent a car from a local airport or city office. Driving is truly the only way to navigate through Kentucky cities, so be sure to spring for a navigation system or plenty of maps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know that Kentucky weather can be unpredictable at best. Here, you will find that summers are warm and humid, and winter brings dangerous ice storms.
  • Find cheap accommodations near highways like I-75 and I-64 for the best deals.
