Frankfort, Kentucky is the capital of this southeastern state. It is known as the home of several bourbon whisky distilleries as well as some of the friendliest bed & breakfast accommodations around. In addition, Frankfort has a number of museums, memorials and historical sties in a town of just under 30,000 residents. Frankfort offers visitors a cheap vacation spot full of war veteran's memorabilia, Greek revival architecture and loads of southern charm.

Know that 3-star quality hotels are about the most luxurious accommodations you will find in Frankfort.

Find most accommodations north of Highway 64, within Frankfort city limits.

Don't be afraid of accommodations off Highway 64 here. The Best Western Parkside is just off the eastern side of town and is the highest rated hotel in town. Rates are well under $90 a night, just as cheap as lesser quality options in many cases.

Know that moderately cheap 2- and 3-star hotel accommodations are to be found here near the capital district for around $100 a night.

  • Visit Kentucky State University, the state's only historically black university.

  • Understand that taxis are available 24 hours a day in Frankfort, but you have to call ahead to get service.
  • Know that Frankfort is bisected by the Kentucky River and that the city is referred to as east and west Frankfort on either side of the waterway.
