Honduras is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua and is the second largest country in South America. Known for its beautiful beaches with coral reefs made for snorkeling, colonial villages and ancient Mayan ruins, Honduras is a relaxed, warm and cheap destination for any traveler.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Know Your Destination

Step1
Prepare to rough it if you are staying in one of the smaller cities in Honduras. It is a poor country, and conditions can be primitive outside of major cities.
Step2
Bring hiking boots and rain gear. The terrain in Honduras is mostly mountainous, and the climate ranges from subtropical to temperate depending on the altitude.
Step3
Pack a bathing suit if you are traveling to the Bay Islands. A four-island paradise situated off the North Coast of Honduras, it is the perfect spot for snorkeling and diving.
Step4
Travel to Tegucigalpa, the capital and largest city in Honduras. Situated in a bowl-shaped valley, it is a pleasant and bustling destination.

Choose Your Transportation

Step1
Take a taxi or moto-taxi to get around most major cities. Negotiate a fare upfront, as most are not metered.
Step2
Ride the public bus between most cities in Honduras.

Select Your Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Honduran Institute of Tourism at (800) 410-9608 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Reserve accommodations at any of the modern and luxurious hotels in Tegucigalpa for first-rate service and amenities.
Step3
Book your accommodations at one of the mid-priced hotels in the city of La Ceiba and enjoy the great food in their restaurant. Rooms can be found for under $50 per night and come equipped with most modern amenities.
Step4
Stay near the beach at a lodge on Utila Island. Accommodations are incredibly cheap, whether you choose to share a dorm room or upgrade to a private room.
Step5
Rent the whole island of Sandy Cay for less than $100 per night! A private island near Utila, one of the Bay Islands, it has one house that sleeps 6-14 people and runs on solar power.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hurricanes and floods along the Caribbean Coast are likely.
  • Bring a Spanish phrase book to converse with the locals.
  • Walk in a group or take a car, especially in Tegucigalpa, the capital. It is not uncommon for foreigners to be robbed on the streets, especially near tourist hotels, in poor areas, or on public transportation.
  • Drink bottled water and be wary of food sold on the streets. Malaria and Dengue Fever can both be contracted in Honduras.
