Instructions

  1. Know Your Destination

    • 1

Look at the trees. Big Trees State Park has two groves of Giant Sequoia redwoods. One of the things that makes these trees so impressive is their sheer girth; they have to be seen to be appreciated.

    • 2

Dress in layers. Temperatures in the Beaver Creek area can go below zero and above 100 degrees and vary over the course of the day. Regardless of season, bring layers and rain gear.

    • 3

Go whitewater rafting on the Stanislaus River (which runs through the park) for a fun day-trip activity.

Get To and Around Beaver Creek in the Calaveras Big Trees State Park

    • 4

Take Highway 4 to get into the park. It takes about 35 minutes to drive into Big Trees from a hotel or motel in Angels Camp on Highway 4.

    • 5

Check for road closures during the winter. The park is open year round, but the roadway that leads to the South Grove is closed during the winter.

    • 6

Hike through the two groves. You will cross Beaver Creek by footbridge as you go by foot to the South Grove, where the largest trees are located.

    • 7

Go cross-country skiing. Although road conditions in the park can be dicey during the winter, cross-country skiing is encouraged.

    Get Accommodations

    • 8

To book accommodations, contact California Travel and Tourism Commission at (800) 462-2543 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

    • 9

Get accommodations in a resort. You can find condominium-style residences open to tourists all year round.

    • 10

Bring your RV. There are also full service RV sites at Angels Camp.

    • 11

Stay at a motel or hotel in Angels Camp. There are four in the area, plus a guest ranch and cottages on the local golf course.

    • 12

Stay at the campground. There are 129 campsites. You can make reservations online or by phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.

  • Get a fishing license. Fishing is allowed in the Beaver Creek area and at the Stanislaus River in the park, but you need a California fishing license.

  • Visit the park's ranger station to receive a schedule of activities, including evening ranger talks and summer children's activities.
