Although it's not home to the hamburger, Hamburg is a flourishing urban city with a fascinating background in the arts. Perhaps best known today as the city that gave The Beatles their start in the music world, this fast-paced city in Northern Germany is full of nightclubs, museums and historical architecture.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Know Your Destination

Step1
Enjoy the contemporary atmosphere of a city that has been at the forefront of the arts for centuries.
Step2
Save your vacation time for the warm days of summer, when you can spend all of your time outdoors. Fall, winter and spring tend to be cool and rainy.
Step3
Brush up on your German phrases. Like many cities in Germany, English will be spoken in larger hotels and at tourist attractions, but off the beaten path you may encounter language difficulties.

Decide on Transportation

Step1
Arrive at Hamburg International Airport from another city in Europe. Located less than five miles from the city center, Hamburg Airport is frequently used for connecting flights.
Step2
Take a bus from the airport to the city center for as little as $3.15 for adults and $1.15 for children. The entire trip takes between 25 and 35 minutes.
Step3
Arrive by train from major cities across Europe. With four major train stations, there are plenty of options available to you. More information about schedules and ticket prices can be found on the German railways (Deutsch Bahn) website.
Step4
Explore the city with the fantastic public transportation options provided by the Hamburg Transit Authority (HVV). A single ticket costs $1.40.

Arrange for Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Hamburg Tourist Board at 011 (+49) 40 300 51 300 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Hold out for a good deal on a room if you aren't prepared to pay $200 a night for your accommodations. The Etap Hotel Hamburg St. Pauli offers basic, clean rooms for around $60 a night.
Step3
Consider renting an apartment for the week if you need larger accommodations. With one of the biggest populations in Germany, it shouldn't be hard to find a good apartment in Hamburg for less than $400 a week.
Step4
Expect to spend at least $275 a night on four-star accommodations in the city center. Luxury hotels in Hamburg offer an array of modern business amenities and beautifully decorated rooms for a reasonable price.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save money if you're under 30 by purchasing the 'Power Pass.' The pass costs $10.75 and comes with 1 day of unlimited travel on public transportation. In addition, you'll also get great discounts on restaurants, museums, attractions and sightseeing tours. Additional days can be purchased for only $6.10.
  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
