Versailles is one of the most well-known cities in France, thanks to its infamous chateau. Most visitors prefer to find accommodations in Paris and make Versailles a day trip. However, there is a lot more to see in this charming royal city than simply the grand Chateau de Versailles, making an extended stay well worth the visit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Hotel reservation confirmation number

Know Your Destination

Step1
Realize that only 20 minutes by train from Paris, Versailles is one of the biggest tourist attractions in France.
Step2
Remember that even the streets have histories in France. Considered very modern in the 18th century, the streets of Versailles have a rational and symmetrical grid pattern.
Step3
Due to the amount of tourists that visit Versailles, the city is saturated with English speakers. Most of the staff at local hotels know at least basic English, and guides at the Chateau de Versailles are usually fluent in a variety of languages.

Explore Transportation Options

Step1
Reach Versailles from Paris by the RER train C. Trains run approximately every 20 minutes. Consider buying the "Paris Visite" card for unlimited travel in zones 1 through 5 for $21 for one day, $47 for 3 days, or $57 for 5 days.
Step2
Enjoy the city's size. Versailles is much smaller than Paris--walk around the city to get the best dose of its fantastic atmosphere.
Step3
Take the bus if you're not up to walking everywhere. The bus service in the city is terrific and is a great alternative to walking or riding a bicycle.

Arrange Lodging

Step1
To book accommodations, contact French Government Tourist Office at 011 (+33) 00 1 514 288 1904 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Consider staying at the Hotel de France-Chateau de Versailles for the reasonable price of $175 to $301 per night. Located right across from the famed chateau, you'll feel like you're an extended member of the royal court without having to pay a kingly price.
Step3
Check out budget accommodations like the Hotel du Palais if you want to stay near the chateau without ruining your budget. At an affordable $65 a night, the Hotel du Palais offers good-sized accommodations with double windows and televisions.
Step4
Live the luxurious life. As long as you're visiting an historic chateau, why not stay in one? You'll feel like the ruler of your own kingdom when you stay at the luxurious Chateau d'Esclimont. With prices ranging from $178 to $1,200, there's a room for every budget.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're planning on visiting the Chateau de Versailles in summer, be sure to buy your admission tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the music store FNAC or at the Tourist Office.
