One of the highlights of Halo and Halo 2 is the multiplayer system. Halo battles are fast, intense and every bit as fun as the single player campaign. But what's this? You keep getting trashed by your friends? You want to show them who’s boss? Welcome to boot camp.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • X-Box Live membership or Internet connection
  • Halo or Halo 2
  1. Step 1

Take a deep breath. The idea of the game is to have fun, and unless you’re playing with hard-core tournament mongers, this should be kept in mind. Stay calm or you’ll throw off your aim.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right weapon. You will usually start out with the assault rifle or submachine gun, and this is OK; everyone else starts out with the same thing. Remember that different weapons are useful for different situations. What works well for long-range combat will be utterly useless at close range.

  3. Step 3

Use the shotgun when you can see your opponent’s eyes. The shotgun is extremely powerful at close range, but fades quickly at longer ranges. If you happen to be close to someone and have your shotgun handy, go ahead and say hi.

  4. Step 4

Play with the big boys. Both the sniper rifle and the rocket launcher are either one- or two-shot kill weapons. The rocket launcher will kill in a single shot if it hits the player, but otherwise results in splash damage. The sniper rifle will kill with a headshot, but otherwise will require another shot. Be aware that both of these are long-range weapons and should not be used when you’re close. The sniper rifle is too slow to move around to hit a moving target, and the rocket launcher will blow YOU up if you fire it too close to something!

  5. Step 5

Throw them a little gift. Grenades are just too much fun to use against your friends. While frag grenades are useful, plasma grenades are so much more fun to use, especially when you stick one to an opponent and watch as they run around helplessly for a few seconds before they buy the farm. Just remember that what goes around comes around.

  6. Step 6

Change tactics. If you like to camp the high perch with the sniper rifle all the time, get ready for a shock: good players will catch on! If you always do the same thing, people will realize it sooner or later and jam a wrench into your gears. Switch it up; grab the sword and do some melee combat, or use the assault rifle and pick them apart at medium range.

  7. Step 7

Run away if you have to. As with the single-player campaign, your shield will recharge itself if you give it enough time. If you find yourself in pain, back off and give yourself a chance to recharge.

  8. Step 8

Remember the little guys. Weapons like the submachine gun and the needler can be very dangerous when in the right hands, especially if you use a pair of them. Just remember to use short bursts; going full-auto will make your crosshairs climb like crazy and, before you know it, you’re shooting the ceiling.

  9. Step 9

Be a good sport. Nobody likes to play with someone who is a sore loser. Cursing and swearing up a storm at a match that went poorly is no way to make friends. People remember who was fun to play, and who wasn’t. If you want to stay on people’s Friend Lists, wish everyone a good game after a match and try not to curse.

on 9/4/2007 Although I don't agree on some of the points also, I don't think Mikeeeeeeeey should really be saying that everybody uses sniper rifle at short ranges, when that is... untrue. Mentioning the n00b combow wasn't neccessary either. I liked the article!

on 5/7/2007 Nice article, I don't agree with some of the points though.

You say that the sniper rifle should not be used close and is useless against moving targets... This is a generalisation; I myself (and I've seen countless other players) use the sniper rifle at both short - long ranges, since as you say, you can kill with one shot. Also you don't mention the drop in trajectory associated with increasing distances with the Sniper.

I'm surprised you've left out some of the more punishing weapon combo's such as the n00b combo (BR + Plasma Pistol) which can effectively kill with two bursts (very quick), and other favourite such as (SMG + Pistol/Plasma Rifle) which can delibate players or get killer head shots.

The best way to get better is practice! Get yourself in the Rumble Training on Xbox Live and stick it out.
