Create a Wedding Guest List

One of the most important elements in any wedding is the guest list. Before making the final decision on who you’re going to invite, you and your significant other have a few things to consider. These steps will help you to create a wedding guest list that is right for your event.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how big your wedding will be. Will it be small and intimate, a huge gathering or in between?

  2. Step 2

Each of you draw up a list of must-have guests. Family takes precedence, of course.

  3. Step 3

Make a list of “not allowed” guests--those people you may not be comfortable inviting. Make another list of those you know for sure won't attend. You can invite them, but they will not figure in the final count.

  4. Step 4

Know your budget. At this point, you should calculate how many people you can afford to have. If you’re on a tight budget, you may have to opt for a smaller guest list.

  5. Step 5

Secure the location of both the wedding and the reception. This will help you determine how many guests you can fit in both places, and might help you narrow down or expand your guest list.

  6. Step 6

Divide the invitations for mailing. Generally, both sets of parents receive one-third of the invitations and the bride and groom each receive one-third, but this can vary depending on who is paying for the wedding.

Tips & Warnings
  • The number of people you plan to invite can help you determine the church and reception venues.
  • Those on the “not allowed” list may include dates of single guests, children, anyone who drinks too much (this raises costs!), ex-partners, and officemates.
  • Having fewer guests will allow you to extend your budget. Having many guests will allow you to mingle with people you haven’t seen in a long time.
  • Be sure to discuss with your significant other the "not allowed" guests. Your partner may have different feelings about the person.
  • If parents are footing the bill, don't forget to consult with them on your guest list.
