Gaining a high position in the search results has no "one solution fits all" kind of answer. There are many different approaches, and some are easier than others to achieve. In many cases it becomes a matter of choice, and some people find certain things easier to do than others. However, there is a certain organic step-by-step procedure that many will agree works well in creating the right atmosphere for a Web site to be positioned high in the search results. The following steps will help you in achieving a high position in the search engines.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a keyword-rich title using a keywords meta tag and a description meta tag in the HEAD section of the HTML code of the main index page of your Web site.

  2. Step 2

Write a page title and place it within H1 font tags in the BODY section of the HTML code. Use your main keyword close to the beginning of the title, and use a secondary keyword if possible in the main index page of your Web site.

  3. Step 3

Include at least 150 words (preferably more) of original content on the page. Include your main keyword twice in the opening paragraph, once in the second paragraph and throughout the rest of the page to achieve a density of between 2% and 5%. Include two or three secondary keywords scattered lightly throughout the page.

  4. Step 4

Create at least five more pages of related content, using the criteria in steps 1, 2 and 3.

  5. Step 5

Create a contact page to allow visitors to contact you and, more importantly, to let the major search engines know you are running a properly structured Web site.

  6. Step 6

Create a site map that lists every page and also links to every page.

  7. Step 7

Create a menu on every page with links to every other page.

  8. Step 8

Submit the main page of the Web site to as many search engine friendly Web site directories as possible to obtain credible authority back links.

  9. Step 9

Write articles on your site's theme and submit them to as many article directories as possible.

  10. Step 10

Write at least one new article a week and use it to create a new page for the Web site, thus organically growing the size of the site.

  11. Step 11

Contact similar but non-competing Web sites to yours and ask to exchange back links.

Tips & Warnings
  • Steps 10 and 11 should be ongoing tasks, as this will grow the size of the Web site and the number of back links naturally and organically.
  • Accept that being positioned high in search results is a slow, organic process that will take some time to achieve. Don't try to cut corners. You should see positive results within three months or so.
  • Do not put any advertising on the pages of your Web site prior to submitting to the Web site directories and being indexed in the major search engines. You will stand a much greater chance of being accepted in this way.
