How to Can Pears

What do you do with fresh fruit on trees? Do you like canned fruit when the fruit is not in season? Pears can be preserved for out-of-season eating. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Pears
  • Canning Jars
  • Dome Lids and Bands
  • Canner
  • Large Pan
  • Measuring Cup
  • Sugar
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

      When the pears are ripe, remove the skin and core the pears.

      Wash pears.

      Make syrup that consists of 3 cups water and 1 cup sugar in a large pan. Bring to a boil.

      Add pears. Bring to a boil. Boil 4 minutes.

    • 5

      Meanwhile, put canning jars upside down in water including the dome lids, put on a burner, and heat so the jars and lids become sterile.

      Put pears in a hot canning jar filling to the "neck" of the jar. Cover the pears with syrup.

      Put a new dome lid on the jar and screw on a band.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dome lid must pop in order for jar to seal.

  • Let jars stand at room temperature until cool.

  • Bands need not be kept on jars after jars have cooled.

  • Store jars in a cool place.
