What do you do with fresh fruit on trees? Do you like canned fruit when the fruit is not in season? Pears can be preserved for out-of-season eating.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pears
  • Canning Jars
  • Dome Lids and Bands
  • Canner
  • Large Pan
  • Measuring Cup
  • Sugar
  • Water
  1. Step 1

When the pears are ripe, remove the skin and core the pears.

  2. Step 2

    Wash pears.

  3. Step 3

Make syrup that consists of 3 cups water and 1 cup sugar in a large pan. Bring to a boil.

  4. Step 4

Add pears. Bring to a boil. Boil 4 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Meanwhile, put canning jars upside down in water including the dome lids, put on a burner, and heat so the jars and lids become sterile.

  6. Step 6

Put pears in a hot canning jar filling to the "neck" of the jar. Cover the pears with syrup.

  7. Step 7

Put a new dome lid on the jar and screw on a band.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dome lid must pop in order for jar to seal.
  • Let jars stand at room temperature until cool.
  • Bands need not be kept on jars after jars have cooled.
  • Store jars in a cool place.

on 8/21/2008 These instructions are much too abreviated to help anyone new to canning and not detailed enough to add useful information to someone with experience canning other types of produce. The instruction regarding sterilizing the jars is likely to cause a minor disaster, if not harm, to someone taking it too literally. SH Lakeside, AZ
