Navigating through pain can be a daunting and stressful task; what's wrong with me, will it continue to get worse, how long will I have to live like this, how much more of my life will become affected, who should I seek help from, how much will it cost?

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
# 1. Assess what your health means to you. Your health and health care options affect the quality of your life. Like any problem, if it does not get managed it will remain and/or get worse over time. What does being well mean to you, to your friends, co-workers, family?
Step2
Check in with yourself and confirm where your priorities lie. Do you want a quick fix without personal involvement? Once out of pain, do you want knowledgeable guidance and help to prevent future flare ups? Do you want to be informed about conventional and non-conventional options for your care to make your decisions accordingly?
Step3
What are your beliefs towards health care? How do you feel about taking medications? How do you feel about surgery? What do you know of other choices that are drugless and non-invasive?
Step4
Look at VALID research (briefly, valid research consists of knowing the sponsors to the research article, reading the body of the paper to ascertain if the conclusion matches up with the observations made, if there was a control group, and the methods used for the subjects)to ascertain the benefits and risks of the outcome you want. Check the profession's official web page for your area/state.
Step5
Do cold calls for a consultation (find chiropractors, acupuncturists, medical doctors, etc.that offer this free of charge). Assess if the doctor listens to you, understood your concerns, agreed pain was real, confidence level, outcomes of other people he/she has worked with that had a similar condition. Call at least two practitioners within one particular field to get a true picture of what that profession, rather than that person, has to offer.
Step6
Compile your overall impression of what you want for your health and what you've found.

Tips & Warnings

  • A great source for obtaining information about a profession is to go to an official web page for the profession in question.
  • Starting out with the lease invasive(lease side affects and short in duration) enables you to try more drastic measures if the outcome is not satisfactory.
  • Ultimately your decisions are yours and will affect the quality of your life, as well as the lives of those who care about you. Take time to make your choices wisely.
