Take the DVDs you own and save them in a format you can view in iTunes.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer

Getting the Movie From DVD to Computer

Step1
Go to versiontracker.com (see Web link, below).
Step2
In the Versiontracker search window, type "Hand Brake" and click Go.

Step3
Click on the blue HandBrake application link that comes up in the list.
Step4
Click the Download Now button. (On some computers, a dialog box will come up warning you that this is an application. Click Continue to finish downloading it.)
Step5
Double-click the folder.called HandBrake that appears on your desktop after downloading is complete.
Step6
Put the CD you want to move to iTunes into your DVD drive. (If your video player starts automatically, quit out of it.)
Step7
Start HandBrake by double-clicking the application HandBrake.
Step8
Click Open (so HandBrake will read the DVD you have in your drive).
Step9
Click the Browse button in the top right.
Step10
Select Desktop from Where.
Step11
Type in the name of the movie mp4 (such as "Terminator.mp4) in Save As. Click Save.
Step12
Click the Rip button. (This process can take a long time. See warning below.)
Step13
Quit HandBrake fter the process has finished.
Step14
Find the .mp4 file that is saved on your desktop. This is your movie. You can now eject the DVD from your computer by dragging the DVD icon to the trash.

Getting the Video Into iTunes

Step1
Start iTunes.
Step2
Go to File and Add to Library.
Step3
Navigate to your desktop and click on the .mp4 movie (e.g. Terminator.mp4).

Step4
Click on the Choose button. Your video is now in your Movie library. (See Related Articles for how to play your video in iTunes.)

Tips & Warnings

  • You can read the documentation that came with HandBrake to determine what type of changes the settings do. Most of the time, you can leave them all on the default settings and it works fine. WARNING: Ripping an entire length DVD can take from a few minutes to several hours depending on the length of the movie, speed of your computer, and speed of your DVD player. You can stop the process at anytime by clicking cancel, but you will have to start the ripping process from the beginning. WARNING: This is only for DVDs you personally own. WARNING: This application is only for Macintosh OS X.
