Indeed is a comprehensive job search engine offering several leads to people looking for employment. This Web site lists job opportunities from popular search engines, newspapers and other mainstream media where organizations post vacancies. A key feature of Indeed is its simple user-friendly and intuitive interface. Follow the steps below to search for jobs using Indeed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Basic Search

  1. Step 1

Go to the Indeed Web site.

  2. Step 2

Enter the desired title, keywords, or name of the organization where you'd like to work in the "What" field. Note that all of these are not mandatory.

  3. Step 3

Use the "Where" field to narrow down your search to a specific location. Enter the city name, two letter state code or area zip code according to your preference. This field is optional and should be left empty if you are open to working anywhere in the United States.

  4. Step 4

Click "Find Jobs" to view jobs matching the search criteria.

  5. Advanced Search

  6. Step 1

Often the results show thousands of opportunities, especially for common jobs such as administrative staff and programmers. In this situation, it becomes difficult to explore all listings. With the "Advanced Search" option you can narrow down the search to view only relevant postings.

  7. Step 2

Click "Advanced Search" on the Indeed homepage.

  8. Step 3

Specify detailed search parameters on the "Advanced Job Search" page. This page can be used to look for job opportunities containing all specified words, an exact phrase, at least one of the specified words, none of the specified words and specific words in the job title. You can also look for company specific jobs, if you want to work in a particular organization.

  9. Step 4

Select the type of job you are interested in--full-time, part-time, temporary, contract or internship. You can also opt to exclude recruiting organizations to view jobs directly posted by companies.

  10. Step 5

Select an option to indicate if you want to view job listings from all Web sites, only company related Web sites or just the job portals.

  11. Step 6

Narrow down the search further by selecting a suitable distance from a particular location. For example, you can choose to view jobs within 15 miles of a certain city, state or area.

  12. Step 7

View only the recent ads by making an appropriate selection. You can also filter out the leads you have already seen.

  13. Step 8

Finally, select the number of results you want to view at a time. By default, the Web site lists 10 opportunities on a result page.

  14. Step 9

Click "Find Jobs" to view jobs matching the search criteria.

  15. Jobs Directory

  16. Step 1

Another way of searching for a job on Indeed is to use its jobs directory. Click "Browse Jobs" from the navigational menu located at the end of all Indeed pages.

  17. Step 2

The resulting page is the "Browse Jobs Directory," allowing candidates to look for jobs based on job title, employer, state and industry. Select the desired option to view related opportunities.

Tips & Warnings
  • None of the fields in "Advanced Job Search" section is mandatory.
  • Some options listed on the "Advanced Job Search" page are separately categorized as preferences on the "Search Preference" page, which can be accessed by clicking "Preferences" on the Indeed homepage.
  • On the search result page, Indeed gives a list of expandable options to the left of the listing. These options--"Title," "Company," "Location," "Job Type," "Employer/Recruiter" and "Recent Job Searches"--summarize the results. For instance, clicking "Job Type" shows within parentheses the number of opportunities available for a particular job type.
  • Indeed is case insensitive so you can use either case.
  • Use Boolean connectors--and, or and not-- to search for multiple keywords and complex combinations. For instance, a search for technical writer or programmer will list all jobs requiring technical writers or programmers. Similarly, a search for (writer or cook) and (IT or hospitality) will list all jobs posted for writers and cooks by the IT and hospitality industries.
  • Perform advanced searches without going to the "Advanced Job Search" page by using phrases such as the name of the company to list all jobs from a particular organization.
  • Narrowing down a search too much may not show any leads.
