How to Post Your Resume on HotJobs

Recently acquired by Yahoo!, HotJobs is one of the biggest and most popular job search engines online. Its popularity amongst corporates automatically increases the probability of your resume being viewed by prospective employers. Here's how you can post your resume on HotJobs.

    Determine the Options for Posting Your Resume on Hotjobs

  1. Step 1

    Go to the HotJobs Web page and become its member if you do not already have a HotJobs account. Membership is free and quick, and allows access to several features useful for seeking employment.

    Log in to your account.

  3. Step 3

    Click the "My Resumes" tab to reach the "Resume Manager" from where you can create new or edit existing resumes, manage an employment profile and/or create, edit and upload cover letters. You can also click the "Post Your Resume Now" link from the "Career Tools" section to reach the My Resumes tabpage.

  4. Step 4

    HotJobs supports following three ways of helping candidates post their resume on the Internet: Upload a resume saved as a Word (.doc), text (.txt) or an HTML file taking a maximum of 100 KB space; HotJobs Resume Builder to create a new resume and HotJobs Text Editor to copy and paste resume content from an exiting file.

  5. Uploading a Word (.doc), text (.txt) or an HTML File

    The "Resume Manager" shows two main options – "Upload New Resume" and "Create New Resume." While "Upload New Resume" is about uploading and existing resume, Create "New Resume" assists candidates create new resumes using HotJobs' Resume Builder and Text Editor.

  7. Step 2

    Click the "Browse" button to upload a Word (.doc), text (.txt) or an HTML file. Notice that "Upload" at this moment is disabled.

  8. Step 3

    Select your resume file from your harddrive.

  9. Step 4

    Click the "Upload" button, which becomes active after a file is selected. The resulting page shows a preview of your resume, as it will appear to online viewers including employers. Note that its formatting is the same as you used in the uploaded file. The name of the uploaded file becomes the name of the resume. To make changes to it, first edit the file on your PC and upload it again using the "Upload Replacement" link. Use the "Formatting Tips" link to better format the resume.

  10. Step 5

    Scroll down the page to finalize the resume and click "Continue." The site brings you to the "My Employment Profile" page requiring you to give employment related details. Required information fields are marked with an asterisk (*). You must create an employment profile to make the uploaded resume searchable.

  11. Step 6

    Click "My Resumes" tab to manage resumes. The uploaded resume appears here with links to help you edit, email, copy or delete it in addition to showing the date when it was last edited.

  12. Step 7

    Note the plus (+) icon next to the name of the uploaded resume. Click the icon to view resume related statistics including the number of times an employer viewed it, number of times it came up in a search and number of job opportunities to which you sent it.

  13. Using Resume Builder to Create a New Resume

    Click the "Resume Builder" link in the "Resume Manager." If you have just uploaded a resume from your PC, then you may need to click the "Upload" or "Create Resume" button to view the "Resume Builder" link.

  15. Step 2

    The Resume Builder is a six step process in which each step is laid out as an information gathering form. All six steps are listed to the left of the page. All fields marked with an asterisk (*) indicate mandatory information.

  16. Step 3

    The first step in the Resume Builder requires you to assign a suitable name to your resume in the "Title" field. By default, HotJobs names your resume as My Resume. Select the default title and type in an appropriate name. The "Create Web Page" option enables you to create an online resume complete with a web address (URL), which can be sent to prospective employers. By default HotJobs does not create the online resume. To do so and get a URL to your Internet resume, select the "Yes" radio button.

  17. Step 4

    Choose a template from the listed designs. Look at the preview of each template by clicking on it and select one by clicking the corresponding radio button. If you do not select any template, Resume Builder uses the first template design. Click "Next" to proceed.

  18. Step 5

    Create an employment profile categorized in three main sections, in the second step. These sections include "Contact Information," where you can enter your name, address and contact information in appropriate fields; "Background and Experience," where you can type in details of your education, work experience, work authorization and last employer; and "Job Preference," where you can indicate your preferences about the new job. You are for instance required to select from up to two job categories, desired annual salary, job type and amount of travel you are willing to do.

  19. Step 6

    Click "Next" after filling in the required details.

  20. Step 7

    Provide details about your work experience in the third step. Enter the name of your previous employer, job title, start and ending month and year of the job, city and state in which you worked along with a job description. If you have worked with multiple organizations, then use the "Add More Experience" link to fill in similar details about other employers. Click "Next" to proceed.

  21. Step 8

    Enter education related information in the fourth step. Fill in appropriate information in different fields and use the "Add More Education" link to enter similar information if you hold multiple degrees or are pursuing a course. Click "Next."

  22. Step 9

    The fifth step offers job seekers an opportunity to list additional but important information. Such information could include hobbies, achievements, aspirations or anything else to add value to the resume. The step is optional displaying two fields, wherein you write a title in the first field and description in the other. Use the "Add More Sections" link to append new sections. Click "Next" to preview your resume.

  23. Step 10

    Preview of your resume and use the "Edit" link to make any modifications to it. After finalizing its look and contents, click "Continue" to go back to the "Resume Manager" and see the newly created resume listed there.

  24. Using Text Editor to Create a New Resume

  25. Step 1

    Click the "Text Editor" link in the "Resume Manager." If you have just uploaded a resume from your PC, then you may need to click the "Upload" or "Create Resume" button to view the "Text Editor" link. Using the "Text Editor" is a three step process.

  26. Step 2

    Assign a name to the resume in the "Title" field and make a selection if you want to create an online resume. Subsequently, in the big textbox copy/cut and paste contents of your resume from an exiting file. Make changes if required. Click "Next" to proceed.

  27. Step 3

    Create an employment profile the way it is described for the second step in using Resume Builder.

  28. Step 4

    Click "Next" to view the resume preview. Use the "Edit" link to make change as necessary. Once the resume is finalized, click "Continue" to see it listed in the "Resume Manager."

Tips & Warnings
  • HotJobs allows you to post up to 10 resumes.
  • Before posting the resume, ensure that you have a final copy of your resume. You can use MS Word or another word processing software to do so. This way, you spend more time organizing information rather than collecting it.
  • The site prompts you to log in if initially you proceed to posting the resume without logging in.
  • Ensure that all the information you provide is correct, both in terms of facts and language.
  • Review the resume before making it available to prospective employers. Ask your domestic partner or friends to review it to get an idea about how it might be perceived by readers.
  • The site restricts resume posting in absence of membership or a successful login.
  • Take care that your resume has no spelling errors for even a single misspelled word is enough to make the prospective employer click away from your resume.
