1
Create Fire Warriors as soon as possible! These soldiers should form the backbone of your forces. They have a good ranged ability, they aren't too expensive and they are able to fight in close combat and hold their own against some basic units. Be aware that they have a quick setup time before they can start shooting.
-
2
Build a few Kroot units as backup. The Kroot squads should be your early melee combatants. They have poor ranged attack, but larger unit size and better close combat ability than Fire Warriors.

3
Call in the Broadside battle suits for heavy fire support! These monsters can entrench themselves and use the large cannons mounted on their shoulders. This greatly increases their ranged attack, especially against vehicles and heavy infantry, though it has the unfortunate side effect of making them immobile. The Broadsides also lack melee ability, so keep them far away from the enemy!
-
4
Back up your Kroot units with Krootox, Shapers and the Greater Gnarloc! These units will greatly increase the power of your Kroot units! Shapers provide support and morale while the Krootox give close support. As for the Gnarloc ...well, you just have to see it in action!
-
5
Get a Tau Commander as quick as you can! The Commander is one of the most important units you can add to your Tau force. He is tough, capable and can be upgraded with an array of weapons to make the enemy run for the hills!
-
6
Get those vehicles out there! Because Tau units tend to be more fragile than other races, vehicles take center stage for them! Make sure to use both armored transport and missile support, otherwise you could find yourself lacking in a firefight while your units reinforce.

Tips & Warnings
DO NOT attempt to engage enemy commanders with Tau units! Enemy commanders are almost universally melee characters and can chop your gun-toting Tau to pieces in very little time! Bring your Kroot in for the commanders! One to two units of Kroot can take down even a Necron Lord, given enough time.
