How to Play Chaos in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

While it may not always be appealing to play the bad guys, the forces of Chaos have a lot going for them! Their units are tough, mean and fight dirty! Playing them is easy, mastering them is a bit difficult, but not so hard as mastering the Orks. Are you ready to take the plunge into the Eye of Terror and commit yourself to the darkness? Power awaits!

Crank them out! Chaos Marines are nearly identical to normal Space Marines! They are cheaper and have a unit cap of 10 troops as opposed to eight, but they tend to break a bit easier and they aren't quite as tough. Still, there's no reason not to use a ton of them!

    • 2

Whip your Heretics into shape! While the Heretic is one of the slower building units in the game, this can be compensated for by using their Forced Labor ability. Don't use it too much! It CAN kill them!

    • 3

Use Cultists as shields! They are cheap and quick to crank out. Use them as shields for your more important forces moving up behind them.

    • 4

Upgrade your Chaos Marines with new weapons. Like their Imperial counterparts, Chaos Marine squads can be outfitted with a variety of different equipment to make them more effective in certain situations. Heavy bolters and missile launchers are great against heavy infantry and vehicles while plasma rifles and flamers are good against infantry.

    • 5

Hold your Raptors back until your forces are committed to a big battle, then jump them in for a nasty surprise! They are at their best in the midst of enemy mobs, so drop them right in!

    • 6

Build as many Horror squads as you can, as fast as you can! They are hardy, have a good attack and are fantastic at breaking enemy morale!

    • 7

Use Possessed Squads and Obliterators to break enemy sieges and defenses. Both of these units are great at smashing through huge units of well-armed and armored opponents. Upgrades for Possessed and Obliterators take a while, but are well worth it.

    • 8

Use as many Defilers as you can! They have nasty ranged and melee abilities, are highly mobile and are just too cool to watch in action! You can have up to six, so build them as soon as you can!

    • 9

Summon the Bloodthirster! Chaos has the privilege of being able to summon one of the monsters of the warp, the Bloodthirster of Khorne! This massive daemon is one of the most powerful units in the game, right next to the Ork Squiggoth and the Eldar Avatar. Beware though: the Bloodthirster constantly loses health and should be protected: if he dies, he is very expensive to replace!

    • 10

Become a Daemon Prince! In the Dark Crusade expansion, your Chaos Lord can get an upgrade and become a Daemon Prince! Second in power only to the Bloodthirster, the Daemon Prince is a terrible force to fight! Summon him and smash your enemies to bits!

beware that in the Dark Crusade expansion that chaos marines can only upgrade to heavy bolters and plasma rifles (plasma rifles at tier 3), so Horror squads are your main anti-tank apart from defilers or Predators. you're also limited to one of each Posessed and Obliterator squads, khorne berserker's are now the main infantry-breaker with their Mark of Khorne ability.

Very good article, though with one minor quibble. Personally, playing the bad guys is ALWAYS appealing! Where else can you let your dark side take over?
